Overview

Ancient Eleftherna is one of the most important archaeological sites of Crete and a living monument of the island's glorious past. It is located approximately 30 kilometers southeast of Rethymno and occupies a jagged ridge of Psiloritis.Eleftherna was one of the most important cities of Crete during antiquity. It flourished particularly during the Geometric and Archaic times, being an important center of culture and trade. Excavations have revealed rich finds that testify to the prosperity of the city, such as temples, public buildings, houses, necropolises and objects of daily use.
